Lee Osler, 35, poisoned Sarah Sutherland, 34, at a children's party two month's after their five-year relationship came to an end.
He targeted a bottle of vodka she had kept in the fridge to mix a lethal cocktail of vodka and bleach.
Miss Sutherland drank it believing "it tasted funny" but put it down to a cheap orange mixer.
The mother-of-two woke the next day with a banging headache and the following two days she fell ill suffering from diarrhea.
When the truth emerged that Miss Sutherland had been poisoned she began suffering from panic attacks and sleepless nights.
Osler, a factory agency worker from Hull, pleaded guilty to a charge of administering poison with intent to injure.
At Hull Crown Court today, he was given an eight-month suspended prison sentence to hang over his head for two years.
Principal Crown advocate Philip Evans said Osler and Sutherland had been in a relationship for five years until it came to an end in October 2013.
He said Osler had to move out of the family home to live with his sister and blamed Sutherland from the break-down in their relationship.
He said they shared contact with their two children but Osler - described by his partner as a loner - suffered from anxiety and depression and was referred to his doctor who advised him to seek counseling.
