The wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, has asked kind-hearted Nigerians to support schools for pupils living with disabilities.
She also urged the pupils not to succumb to limitations and intimidation.
Fashola said this in Lagos at the commemoration of the International Day for Persons living with Disabilities. The state Ministry of Education organised the event for pupils with special needs.
Fashola, represented by Mrs. Rhoda Ayinde, said physical or mental disabilities, such as hearing impairment, Autism, blindness and Down’s syndrome need not deter the pupils from becoming achievers.

She said, “We can give something to their schools because no amount is too small. You can also give your time as a volunteer if you do not have material resources. Children with special needs do not need our pity but love and compassion. I am also appealing to the Federal Government to ensure that we have laws, which support people with disabilities and ensure that there is no discrimination in admission and job placement.

“I congratulate you pupils and I want you to know that God has a purpose for you. No limitation can hold you down. Your situation is not a limitation as long as you are not limited in your mind.”

In his welcome address, a pupil of the Modupe Cole Special School, Hakeem Akande, commended the state government for its efforts at inclusive education.

The Chairman, National Association of Special Educators of Nigeria, Mr. Adeleke Owoade, while also appreciating the state government, canvassed the reintroduction of the special teachers’ allowance.

Meanwhile, pupils from various schools entertained guests with drama, Christmas carol, fashion parade, just as they displayed their arts and crafts.
