Reports coming in from Jigawa State indicate that a police inspector, named Lado Nuhu has lost his life while trying to avert Fulani/farmers clash.
The deceased inspector, who was attached to Kirikasamma police division, was reportedly attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen after settling an impending dispute between farmers and herdsmen, Leadership reports.
He was with a team of policemen who tried to bar Fulani herdsmen from taking their cows into a farm land.
The attack on the inspector reportedly occurred after the police chased out the pastoralists from the farm lands where farm produce had not yet been harvested.
The herdsmen in a reaction allegedly ambushed the policeman at a narrow way around the river bank where they beat and pushed him into a river.
Responding to questions from journalists, Alhaji Mahamud Matafari the chairman of Kirikasamma local government area confirmed the incident saying; “it was unfortunate and shocking; we are just coming back from his burial.”
When the state police command spokesman, DSP Abdu Jinjiri, was contacted for confirmation, he said: “Of cause, one of our officers lost his life on duty when he mistakenly drowned in a river and died.”
In a related development, the state commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Dr. Muhammed Gidado Fari said a 14-year-old student also died in fire accident that gutted female hostel of May Excellence Secondary School, Hadejia.
